Punchbear's music...

I'm still struggling to refine my songwriting and guitarplaying but thanks to GarageBand, I'm one step closer to documenting all my tunes. Bass player first though.

Benchmark

This song means a lot to me, it's the touchstone for so many times in my life, but I never recorded a decent version of it. This is an attempt to rectify this. It's just a simple 4 chord trick, all about trying to find whatever it is that everyone of us is driven to try and find in their lives. I need to get a proper mic and record proper vocals for this, other than that I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I swear by GarageBand now, especialy after losing my Logic key....*weeps*.

Have at, good people :)

*edit* This is the fifth attempt to post this song, the player keeps playing it back either at doublespeed or halftime. It's in G, it's 120 bpm and plays fine here on my machine in all players and editors. Seriously frustrating. Any ideas?? Anything similar happen to anybody else? How does one prevent it from reoccurring..

Blackeyed

Full title is Blackeyed From The Telescope. Written in about 5 minutes, recorded in 40. For my daughter.

Lyrics:

I'm nothing without you, I'm a scene
Just another heart in the daydream scheme
When I feel your love
It brings me close to tears
When I feel your heart in mine

I'm floating on the boundaries of your life
Nothing else makes me feel more alive
And I know it's tough
You might even say it's rough
And nothing can keep me from your side

And I'll be there when you cry
Just for you
I'll be there 'til I die

I'm blackeyed from trying to make ends meet
And it'd be fair to say I haven't slept in weeks
But you're there like a star
So bright and yet so far
But you know I'm scratching for the sky

And I'll be there when you cry
Just for you
I'll be chasing angels of dust through this life so cruel
I'll try to keep my heart above water
Cause drownings not an option I'd choose
So come what may and whatever forever
Just for you.....

It's still embryonic.....much fixing to be done, no bass to speak of and I can't get the right vocals for the verses going, so I left them off.

Enjoy :)

Hope that one works, its been tried in a variety of bitrates.

Blinder

Work in progress.

Lyrics are something like:

When I see bearded men worry the Lego factory,
I say "well done lads, that smells like victory"
When a bishops toilet stinks of celebrity
I say "well done lads, that makes great tv"

You've played another blinder, my friend, once again. Etc...

Vocals are rough, more scratches and guides for something better and to ensure I don't forget what the vocal melody is. Anyway, get the red marker out :)

Bound

Vocals peak like mad (dang mic). It's a song about being in a relationship for so long that you're utterly trapped. Hence "We are not one, we are bound". Recorded in Logic Express, one acoustic DI'ed and treated in Guitar Rig in Garage Band. Vocals through the built-in mic on the laptop, that's why they peak so badly. Must've driven the neighbours mad recording this in the kitchen. Drums were just a loop. Bass is the acoustic with an Oktaver to drop the pitch.

But, my God, do I love Guitar Rig :) Don't forget to vote!

Lyrics:

Well if you showed me the way
You know it wouldn't have hurt
If I'd just buried my pride
and followed my heart
reined in my mouth and not given so much away
I know I'd have more cards left to play

If on the 4th of july it all should ignite
And all those tiny grievances should run in the light
We'll give them life of their own
And a birthday to stay drunk on
And a thousand excuses to walk home alone

We are not one, for we are bound
to fall on down

Well if you showed me a way I'd try not to bite you
It's been kind of hard to get to like you
I'm not gonna break and run
but I've got ways and means
So if it goes any further you've got yourself to blame

We are not one, for we are bound
to fall on down

Fluke (chopped)

This one yet again is just an instrumental version, I messed up the vocals a bit and lost the original GarageBand files after upgrading to Tiger (uebersuckage), which is probably a good thing as the vocals were very weak. Same setup as before, old acoustic recorded directly into that built-in mic with a few filters on the guitars - plenty of clangers but I'm more worried about the songs structure at the moment.

Have at :)

From The Plane

This song popped into my head somewhere between swinging on a hammock in Argentina and watching the black mountins of Fireland and missing a beautiful lady I'd only just met. I've a bit of a cold again, but the loan of the mic gave a a distinctively warm tenor to proceedings. I'm not hitting the notes I want to but otherwise I'm happy with the tune, adding new verses here and there.

Lyrics thusfar:

From the planes, the mountains
Seem to love the sky
They're veined with icy fountains
Flowing through my heart
The bible at my ankles
My head up in the sky
and from the plane the mountains
never dared to look so high

this brave dream
conquers everyone
but I won't share
this with anyone
but you
but you

Something like that

Lend Me Your Giants

So finally, after years of threatening it, I got myself an Edirol FA-66 and an AKG 200 mic and here's the first rough new tune I've recorded with them. Song's written about a stag week I just went on in Ireland, a gathering of old mates in a cottage on an island, before the first one bites the dust as it were, no more acting the maggot and partying but needing to keep these bonds of friendship alive. They're so important. And the weird thing when I was writing it is that I had this vague "Saving Private Ryan" thing in the back of my mind and somehow the lyrics could double up for soldiers about to go into or coming from combat. Anyways, hope ye enjoy it. PB

Lend Us Your Giants

Are you coming with us away from this shore,
Where the sun hangs low and chases our flaws,
To silent roads and steady declines,
To the straw of our youth and our lost valentines

When the ramp hits the beach, you can feel your soul thaw,
As the motors start up and the wheels start to roll,
And bless this here tin that is gold in your paw,
We'll have words with our giants on the shoulders of gods.

And wave goodbye to certainty,
It's not too far from here you see,
A time like this isn't everyday,
It's a serious business making memories.

We'll gather ourselves in this room while we can,
Each one a star in this lifes firmament,
And we'll drink like heroes like only we should,
bonded by pain, laughter and this strange brotherhood

We'll drain our glasses in memory of those now gone,
Offer them praises in word, deed and song,
We'll think about those who couldn't be there today,
Warm in the thoughts of our shared yesterdays.

And say hello to fraternity,
It's the be-all end-all here you see,
A time like this is so damn precious,
We do so love our unholy messes.

And when we're all done with our brief ecstacy,
And the sky has dulled to a warm aniseed,
We'll clap backs, shake hands and each to disappear,
To the corner of the world he calls home.

And stick the boot in for comedy,
That's why we're all here you see,
Our houses and cars get left at the door,
For the briefest of times, who could ask for more?

Losers Dressing Room

Okay, I'm not the greatest singer in the world, but I'm happy with this wee tune. Rough as per usual, but it's more about capturing the idea while it's still hot.

Lyrics are a little like this:

There's a bright light in the hallway
And a stop-sign in the doorway
And this years flowers stoop their heads and die
There's a notebook full of good will
And good intentions like an oilspill
And applause leaves you dry inside

There's only one door marked exit
And you're only one drink from forgetting
There's always someone that gets left behind

And the loneliest place
Is the losers dressing room
It's the bitter sweet taste of a love that you'll never know
And it's the sweethearts embrace when there's no more tomorrow
Just don't close the door when you leave

So it's gloves off with the mirror
You know it's rude to stare at a sinner
Just screw your eyes shut and maybe he'll go away
The phone's dead in its cradle
You know you're willing but disabled
The longest distance is always the final mile

There's only one door marked exit
And you're only one drink from forgetting
There's always someone that gets left behind

And the loneliest place
Is the losers dressing room
It's the bitter sweet taste of a love that you'll never know
And it's the sweethearts embrace when there's no more tomorrow
Just don't close the door when you leave
The last thing you lose is the key

It's getting brighter

And the loneliest place
Is the losers dressing room
It's the bitter sweet taste of a love that you'll never know
And it's the sweethearts embrace when there's no more tomorrow
Just don't close the door when you leave

I'm playing with a band now and it's really working out, playing the music I've always wanted to play, which is sweet, we function well as a three-piece.

Anyway, let me know what you think. It helps that the guitarist/singer is a sound engineer :) We're called Team Kerosin.

Please don't forget to vote/rate.

Thrashy stuff

Songs haven't been coming thick and fast of late, but lots of little thrash riffs in their stead. Maybe time to make some metal songs? In theory, it's workable, but in the absence of a drummer, I've been toying with the idea of just playing with my hands and feet on whatever's available and treating it to bits. No substitute for a real drummer and drum programming has never been my forte, but dammit it's fun doing it like this. Just roughly humming riffs and hand-and-foot jamming over it with the mic at an angle over the whole must-be-annoying-as-feck-for-my-flatmate affair.
